The quality of wood is of prime importance to perfect the art of carving. Basswood is highly favored for its fine grain texture. Mahogany, walnut, pine, oak, sugar pine and butternut are equally good. Hard woods like oak and mahogany are fit for broad patterns, while the soft ones like butternut and basswood lend themselves to great detailing and intricate patterns.
